macossierraWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple has released the next version of its desktop operating system, macOS. This has been previously known as OS X. macOS 10.12 is available for free via the Mac App Store. It is compatible with all Macs made after 2009.

The largest feature of macOS sierra is the addition of Siri, the voice assistant that has previously been only on the iPhone and iPad. Siri allows for the same functionality on the Mac that it does on iOS. Additionally Siri can be use for searching for files and emails.

There are also many improvements made to Exchange connectivity via the included Mail app. Mail from Exchange servers will now be retrieved more quickly.

This update has been tested over several months and is very stable. It can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store on any computer that is able to run OS X Yosemite. A few highlighted features are:

  • Redesigned Notes application allowing adding of fonts, images and more formatting.
  • Updated Mail application to provide faster and more efficient email access.
  • Safari 9 provides the ability to pin tabs of frequently accessed sites as well as mute audio coming from a individual tab.
  • Spotlight search now searches both the Internet and your local computer.

windows8logoWASHINGTON, PA – Today Microsoft has released Office 2016 for Windows. Office 2016 is available for both Windows and OS X.

Customers who subscribe to Office 365 will be able to obtain the update as part of their subscription over the next few weeks. Office can also be purchased individually in retail packages. This version of Office will function on computers running Windows 7 or higher.

Some key features of Office 2016 are:

  • Increased collaboration including the ability for multiple people to edit a document in real time and Skype integration.
  • Office 2016 has been improved with fast search.
  • Easier access to features via a help menu that places the menu item for that feature below the search bar instead of giving instructions on how to access the feature.

osxyosemiteWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple previewed the next edition of OS X at their World Wide Developer’s Conference (WWDC). This version of OS X focuses on performance enhancements and usability. These performance enhacements are intented to allow the computer to not only perform faster but run more efficiently.

Some noteworthy enhacements include:

  • Window pinning – Similar to the functionality found in Windows, individual windows can be dragged to corners of the screen and they will automatically fill half of the screen.
  • Safari Enhacements – Safari now includes a mute button for individual tabs. Also tabs can be pinned so they will always be open and accessible from Safari windows.
  • Photos – Location data can now be added to photos.

OS X El Capitan will be made available as part of a public beta. The final version will be available as a free update in the Fall. This version of OS X will run on all of the same computers that the current version, 10.10 Yosemite.

osxyosemiteWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple has released the next version of OS X, version 10.10, Yosemite. OS X Yosemite is a free update that is compatible with all of the same machines that were compatible with the previous versions, OS X Mavericks.

Yosemite features a refreshed look and feel that brings a lighter, more modern feel to the icons and type. It also features iCloud drive which allows users to store any type of file on iCloud. In addition a new version of Safari is included that is faster and more battery efficient.

Another major update is to the Mail application. From within Mail, large attachments can be sent via iCloud eliminating problems with size limits. Also a new feature known as mark-up allows forms and pictures to be filled out and annotated directly within the Mail application.

Finally for users with iOS devices Yosemite allows for a series of integrations known as continuity that allows documents, email, notes, web browsing sessions and even phone calls to flow between Mac, iPhone and iPad.

OS X Yosemite can be downloaded now from the Mac App Store for free.

osxmavericksWASHINGTON, PA – Over the last week information about a critical bug in Linux and Unix-based systems that exposes a large security hole has been making news. This bug, though potentially serious will not impact the majority of our customers. One area that requires patching is computers running OS X. In its default configuration, OS X is not vunerable to the bug, however today Apple released updates for Mavericks, Mountain Lion and Lion to protect the machine.
