androidWASHINGTON, PA – Toay Google anounced the next version of Android, currently known as Android “L”. Android L is the next major release of Android after Kit Kat. This release of Android is only for developers. This offers new interfaces for programing and a new user interface.

The primary focus of this release of Android is to allow it to run on many types of devices. Traditionally Android can be found on phones and tablets. This release of Android will expend that to cars, televisions and wearables like watches.

ios_logoWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple announced the next version of iOS, iOS 8, at its World Wide Developer’s Confrecnce (WWDC).  iOS is the operating system that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. iOS 8 will be a free update available in the fall. The update will work on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPad 2, iPad with Retnia Display, iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad with Retina Display.

There are many new features added to the operating system. Some highlighted features include:

  • iCloud Photo Storage – More photos can be stored in iCloud allowing storage of photos well in excess of your device’s built-in storage.
  • Messages Enhancements – The messages app will now sync text messages not sent through iMessage between devices. There is also now quick support for video and voice messages sent via iMessage or text.
  • Keyboard Support – The keyboard included with the iPhone now features contextual predective typing. In addition iOS will now support third party keyboards to allow further customization.
  • Family Sharing – Shares iTunes content with other accounts associated with the same credit card.
  • Enhanced Enterprise Deployment – iOS devices can be delivered to employees and automatically configured with required network, mail and app settings.
  • Widget Support – iOS now supports third-party widgets in Notification Center.

windows phoneWASHINGTON, PA – Today at their Build conference Microsoft announced details of the next version of Windows Phone, version 8.1. The newest version of Windows Phone is being automatically rolled out to devices running Windows Phone 8. This new version builds on the improvements already offered in Windows Phone 8 and creates a even more user-friendly device. Windows Phone 8.1 will also be found on new devices being rolled out by Nokia.

The most notable update to Windows Phone is the addition of Cortana. Cortana is a voice-activated assistant similar to Siri on Apple devices and Google Now on Android devices. Named after the helpful AI in the Halo video games, Cortana is tied to be Bing search engine and is designed to learn your preferences and learn with use. Cortana is launching as a Beta.

Some other highlighted features of Windows Phone 8.1 include:

  • Start Screen Improvments: Three columns are now available on all devices, not just ones with larger screen. A image can now also be set as the background on the Start Screen.
  • Lock Screen Improvements: The lock screen has new themes.
  • Action Center: Allows to see notifications from all applications and quick access to frequently used settings.
  • Word Flow Keyboard: The keyboard in Windows Phone learns it’s user’s writing style and suggests words and names form your contacts.
  • Skype: Skype is now integrated in the phone dialer.
  • Calendar Enhancements: The Calendar app has been re-designed to look and work more like Outlook on the PC.
  • Power and Data management: Windows Phone 8.1 has tools built into it to help automatically connect your phone to free WiFi access points and monitor data usage. It also helps show which apps are using your phone’s battery.

windows8logoWASHINGTON, PA – Today Microsoft has announced their new CEO. Satya Nadella will be replacing Steve Balmer as CEO effective immediately. This is the result of a search that started in August when Balmer announced he would be retiring within a year. Nadella is the third CEO of Microsoft. He has been with the company since 1992.

Prior to his appointment as CEO Nadella, he was Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group. This group was responsible for bringing Microsoft’s cloud products to market, specifically Office 365 and Windows Azure.

In addition the the appointment of Nadella, Microsoft also announced that founder Bill Gates will be stepping down as Chairman of the Board. As of today Gates will be serving as Technology Advisor. In this role he will be spending more time at Microsoft to help shape Microsoft’s product direction and to provide support for Nadella.

KitKat offeres many improvements and has lesser system requirements than previous versions. With these lesser requirments users with older phones will be able to take advantage of the newest version of Android.
