ios_logoWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple previewed the next version of iOS, the software that poweres the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. This version of iOS will run on the same devices that iOS 8 runs on. For the first time Apple is allowing a public beta allowing users to test the new software on their devices without being a member of the development program. iOS 9 is being promoted mostly as a maintenance release. The final relase of iOS is due out in the fall. Some of the highlighted new features are:

  • Siri enhancements – Siri has a new interface and also includes more contextual awareness. Siri will also provide predictive alerts and notifications paying attention to usage patterns as well as traffic conditions. Siri will also automatically reccomend apps based on usage.
  • iPad ehnacnements – iPads with iOS 9 will feature more multitasking. Users with a iPad Air 2 will be able to do true multi-tasking with side-by-side apps. Users with older iPads will be ale to take advantage of detached video, allowing video to be played whil using other apps.
  • Improved Built-In Apps – The Notes app has been completely re-written providing more rich features. The Maps app has been updated to provide transit directions. Newstand has been repalced with a new News app providing content from many news providers
  • General Enhancements – In addition to the above user-facing featurs there has been a lot of improvements in the base operating system. iOS now features a low power mode turinging off features that impact battery live extending the life of the battery for up to an hour. In addition to this low power mode the entire system has been tweaked to allow for longer battery life with all features on. The size of iOS as well as the space needed for installation has also been greatly reduced allowing users with lower capacity devices to have a cleaner experience in their upgrade.

androidWASHINGTON, PA – Today Google has released a update to Android Lollipop, version 5.1. This update adds support for multiple SIM cards, a anti-theft technology and HD voice for compatible phones. This update also provides stability, security and performance enhancements.

With multiple SIM support more than one SIM card can be used in compatible devices. This can allow people to use multiple numbers or more cost efficient calling when traveling abroad. A new function called Device Protection requires a user to log in with their Google Account if a device is lost or stolen.

androidWASHINGTON, PA – Today Google previewed the next release of Android, version 5.0 Lollipop. This next version will be a free update and is scheduled to be released in “the next few weeks.” As with most Android updates the update will be released as phone manufacturers make them available and carriers approve. Nexus devices will be the first ones to receive the update.

Lollipop features a redesigned user interface, improved notifications, improved battery optimization and performance updates.

Once Lollipop is publicly released, it will be available as a on-device update.

A summary of the highlighted updates are below:

  • Design: Lolipop features a new colorful design that is unified across devices including TVs, watches phones and tablets. The new design also features new animations.
  • Notifications: There are new ways to control notifications and when they appear, allowing only wanted notifications to appear.
  • Power Management: Devices will see up to a 90 minute bettery life improvement thanks to optimizations in Lollipop. There are also timers added that will show how long the battery will last, and how much longer it will take to charge.

ios_logoWASHINGTON, PA – Today Apple has released the newest version of iOS, version 8. This version bring several enhancements to the operating system. The update can be applied either directly on the device or by connecting it to a computer running iTunes 11.4. Users with older devices such as the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 may want to wait a few days prior to installing the update to ensure that it does not cause the device to become slow.

Some of the major features of the new OS are:

  • Notifications: When notifications are received they can be responded to immediataly. Also third party developers are now able to place widgets into the notification area.
  • iCloud: iCloud has added a feature called iCloud Drive. This allows for storage of any type of data in iCloud. Apple has also included a new photo library to make storage of a large number of photos easier. Family sharing has been added to also allow users to share Apps and Music with up to 6 accounts that share a single credit card.
  • Keyboard Enhancements: The iOS keyboard now provides intellegent word completion suggestions to allow for faster typing. Also not included for the first time is the ability to install third-party keyboards.
  • Camera: Additional editing capibilies have been added to the camera app. This includes a new time-lapse feature.
  • Siri: It is promised that Siri will regognize dictation much faster and more reliably. It also now can recognize music playing in the background.  A new way to activate Siri has also been added. When the device is plugged in, you can say “Hey Siri” and then state your command.
  • Health: HealthKit allows for tracking of heath-related data such as steps taken, and calories in food consumed.
  • Integration: A major component of iOS 8 is a feature called Continuity. It allows you to flow between iOS Devices and Mac computers. For example a email can be started on your iPhone and finished on your iPad.
